Let The Man Cook

"Wait Mr. L, Let me cook" a student being tutored and finding confidence in his understanding of the material

"Exciting progress is underway in our math sessions! Over the past two weeks, I've been working closely with students on essential concepts like multiplication, factors, and composite numbers. Witnessing the light bulb moments as they grasp the connections between these topics has been truly rewarding.

In the process, I've come to understand the nuances of accommodating Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). While students might initially view access to a calculator as an advantage, it can inadvertently hinder their mental math skills and foster a false sense of reliance on technology. Today, during a session, I guided a student through filling out their multiplication table, emphasizing the patterns that emerge when columns are completed. After a few repetitions, instead of relying on my verbal instructions, the student said,

'Wait, Mr. L, let me cook.'

Seeing this proactive attitude and the desire to work independently brought a genuine smile to my face.

This experience reinforced my belief that my presence as an educator is instrumental in nurturing students' independence. It inspired a new approach, encapsulated in the phrase, 'It's time for you to chef it up.' By empowering students with the essential ingredients – or skills – they need, we enable them to create the most extraordinary 'meals' in the form of academic progress.

I am dedicated to providing tailored support that not only fosters understanding but also cultivates a sense of confidence and self-reliance in each student I work with. Together, we are building a foundation for their future success in mathematics and beyond."
